Dog bed size guide

The best dog bed is one your dog can stretch out on. Use this guide to choose size, shape and materials.

How to measure

Measure your dog from nose to the base of the tail while they sleep in their favourite position, then add 10 to 15 cm.

Curlers

Dogs that curl up often like a bed with raised sides or bolsters.

Check

Look at the internal sleeping area, not the outer size.

Tip

If your dog is between sizes, go up a size.

Sprawlers

Dogs that stretch out need a flat bed or a raised cot with plenty of length.

Bed types

Choose the shape that suits how your dog sleeps.

Sofa and bolster beds

A raised edge gives something to lean on. Look for a removable cover and a non-slip base.

Washing

Machine-washable covers make it easier to keep the bed fresh.

Care

Follow the care label and let covers dry fully.

Raised cooling cots

A raised mesh cot lets air circulate and works indoors and in the garden. Many fold for storage or camping.

Older dogs

A raised cot can be harder to get onto for stiff dogs. Consider a lower bed or add a step.

Frequently asked questions

How big should a dog bed be?

At least 10 to 15 cm longer than your dog from nose to tail base, so they can stretch out.

Are raised beds good in summer?

Raised mesh cots allow more airflow underneath, which many dogs find more comfortable in warm weather.

How often should I wash a dog bed?

Wash the cover regularly, following the care label, and more often if your dog is muddy or has skin issues.
