Which Dog Car Seat, Hammock or Harness?
A 2-minute decision guide by where your dog rides, your dog's size, and your car.
Start with where your dog rides
On the back seat, and you want them raised so they can see out
→ A booster car seat. Small dogs (up to ~10kg) suit a single-seat booster; up to ~18kg, a bolstered bench seat. Raised position also helps with car sickness.
On the back seat, and you mainly want the car protected
→ A full-bench hammock. Best value all-rounder: covers seat, seat-backs and footwell, stops the dog dropping into the gap. Pick the mesh-window version for an anxious dog that needs to see you.
In the boot
→ A boot liner with a bumper flap and, ideally, side panels. Add a cargo tether and a dog guard. Choose Standard for a hatchback, XL for an estate/SUV.
Older, stiff, or recovering dog
→ A folding ramp (for dogs that can walk an incline) or folding steps (for small or very stiff dogs). Aluminium ramps take up to 90kg.
Then add restraint - always
Whatever they ride in, clip a crash-tested harness to a tether or the seat-belt. Size by chest girth (S 40-56cm / M 52-70cm / L 66-86cm / XL 82-104cm); size up if between.
